I need college

the rest of this post didn’t show up when I first posted it… wtf

it was supposed to say

“…because when it’s 1am and I feel like practicing, I can play flute without worrying about people who actually sleep.”

Respect. (MUSICIANS - take a look.)

I am frankly appalled at how little recognition arts receive in some high schools. I don’t care if this is selfish anymore.. Someone needs to say it.

Someone PLEASE explain to me why athletes get HUGE press releases about signing a letter of intent to play collegiate sports, but there is nothing for music or art.  We work just as hard, spending just as many hours perfecting what we do, performing as much as they play games. We are no different. Musicians make up teams just like athletes do, compete, practice on their own, etc. Varsity athletes get exempt from gym class, so why don’t the kids in the musical who are literally at school until 9pm or later (at one time or another) get exempt? I am grateful that our school (luckily) allows people in marching band to be exempt. But even that is frowned upon since others think we don’t “work hard.”

The rationale our school uses: If we allow kids in the musical to be exempt, what about everyone else in other activities?

Consistency, my friends. Consistency.

And yet, our school recognizes girl/boy athletes of the year, holds press releases for signing letters of intent to play college-level sports, has a scholarship dedicated solely to one female/male athlete, has a hall of fame section of the school, among several other dedications to athletes.

Don’t get me wrong- I respect everything athletics teaches people. I’m not against any of it. I just believe that everyone deserves equal recognition, and I want to change it. And if our school wasn’t so damn resistant to change, I wouldn’t be ranting here in the first place, because believe me- I’ve tried.

So, it has come to this.

These are the times that you learn who your true friends are. Who supports you and who doesn’t, who cares and who is careless, and who will stick around and who won’t.

I get a headache when trying to decide where I want to go to school. To alleviate this, I am doing my best to research Northwestern in great detail and get all of the information that I POSSIBLY can about the flute studio and music program.

My psych teacher told me to look in the mirror, look myself in the eyes and say, “I want to go (fill in the blank here).” If I can’t look myself in the eye and say that school, I shouldn’t go there. But the problem is that I love both so much. U of I is safe, NU is wonderful, but a leap of faith.

Only time will tell.

Prompt for a college essay: “If I were not able to play music anymore…” Any thoughts or suggestions? I’ve written two different intros and don’t like either of them.
